THE GIRL HER FATHER GAVE AWAY

Baba Bisi was once a good man. He lived peacefully on his farm with his wife and their only daughter, Rose. Rose was a gentle child—quiet, obedient, and full of love. But everything changed the day her mother died.

After the burial, the house became cold and empty. Baba Bisi tried to care for Rose alone, but it was not easy. Friends and relatives advised him to remarry so that someone could help raise the child. With time, he agreed and brought another woman into the house. Her name was Mrs. Shola.

From the very first day, Mrs. Shola never liked Rose.

She treated Rose like a stranger in her own home. Sometimes she cooked food and gave everyone except Rose. Other times, she sent Rose to do all the house chores—sweeping, washing, cooking—while other children rested. Rose worked from morning till night, yet no one ever said “thank you.” If she complained, Mrs. Shola beat her or insulted her.

Rose cried silently every night.

As for Baba Bisi, instead of protecting his daughter, he slowly changed. He started drinking alcohol every day. The strong man he once was became weak and careless. He no longer noticed Rose’s tears or the marks on her body. He stopped caring about her life completely.

Baba Bisi owned a farm where people worked for him. But because of his drinking habit, money stopped coming in. One day, a farmer who had worked on the farm for five months came to ask for his wages.

“Baba Bisi,” the man said, “I have been working for you for five months. You promised to pay me. Where is my money?”

Baba Bisi looked confused and ashamed. “I don’t have the money,” he replied.

The farmer became angry. “How can you say that? I worked under the sun and rain for you!”

Baba Bisi looked around helplessly. Then his eyes fell on Rose, who was sitting quietly by the corner of the house, her head bowed, her face innocent and tired.

Suddenly, Baba Bisi pointed at her and said something that broke the heavens.

“Take her. She is my child. Take her in exchange for the money.”

The farmer froze.

“What?” he asked in shock. “Your own child? You want me to take your daughter? You don’t even know me!”

Baba Bisi waved his hand carelessly. “She is of no use to me. She is nothing. Take her.”

Rose felt her heart tear apart. She burst into tears.

“Daddy, no!” she cried. “Please don’t send me away.”

The farmer felt pity, but he was also helpless. He had worked for months without pay. After a long silence, he walked up to Rose and knelt before her.

“My dear he said gently, “would you like to go with me?”

Rose shook her head and cried harder. She did not want to leave the only home she knew, no matter how painful it was.

But as the sun went down and no one defended her—not her father, not her stepmother—Rose realized she had no choice.

With tears in her eyes and fear in her heart, Rose stood up and followed the man, leaving behind the house that had rejected her.

She did not know where she was going.
She did not know what her future held.

But that day, a girl was sold…
and destiny quietly began to change.

FROM TEARS TO THE UNKNOWN…

With a heavy heart and swollen eyes, Rose finally followed the man who worked on her father’s farm. She looked back one last time, but no one called her name. No one stopped her.

As they walked away, the man spoke gently for the first time.
“Hi,” he said, “my name is John. Let’s go.”

They entered a bus heading to Lagos.

Inside the bus, Rose sat quietly by the window. Her heart was racing. Her mind was not at rest.
I pray this man will be kind, she thought. Even if he’s not as nice as my father once was, let him just be a good man.
Men had never been good to her. Pain was all she knew.

John noticed her silence.
“Are you okay?” he asked softly.
“Are you fine?”

Rose nodded, but fear sat deep in her chest.

When they finally arrived in Lagos, Rose was stunned. Tall buildings, bright lights, fast cars—everything looked glamorous and strange. She had never seen anything like it in her life. Her eyes moved everywhere. This was another world.

Soon, they stopped in front of a very big building, standing boldly behind a tall gate. Rose froze.

“What are we doing here?” she asked nervously.

John smiled calmly.
“One of my uncles is abroad,” he said. “He left this house for me to take care of.”

Rose’s heart beat faster. A house like this? For her? She had never even imagined such a place.

Inside, everything felt unreal. Clean floors. Quiet halls. Big rooms. John showed her where she would sleep. Rose touched the bed gently—it was the biggest bed she had ever seen.

That night, she slept… deeply.

The next morning, she woke up slowly, confused.
Where am I?

She walked around and found herself in the kitchen—only to see John making breakfast.

She stood still. No one had ever cooked for her before.

Nothing made sense anymore.

As she watched him, John turned and said something that made her heart skip:

“I’d like you to meet someone very important to me. Would you like to?”

Rose swallowed hard.

Rose slept peacefully most nights.
No shouting.
No beating.
No hunger.

For the first time in her life, she slept like someone who mattered.

When she woke up one beautiful morning, she smiled. Her heart was light. Nobody had woken her with anger or insults. She slowly stepped out of the bedroom, still wondering if everything was real.

Just then, John approached her.

“Good morning, Rose,” he said warmly.
“How was your night?”

Rose nodded shyly. “It was… peaceful,” she replied. And it was true.

John smiled. “Get dressed. Wear something nice. I want you to meet someone very important to me.”

Rose’s heart beat fast. She quickly dressed up, tidied her hair carefully, and followed John outside.

Soon, they arrived at a very big mansion, even bigger than the one Rose had seen before. Her eyes widened again. Is this really my life now? she wondered.

John stepped forward respectfully.
“Good afternoon, Ma,” he greeted.
“This is Rose, my friend. I wanted her to meet you. I told her you’re my uncle’s sister.”

Mrs. Clara looked at Rose and smiled brightly.

“Oh, Rose!” she said happily. “I’ve heard so much about you. How have you been? I hope you’re enjoying yourself.”

Rose nodded, still shy.

“John has told me many beautiful things about you,” Mrs. Clara continued.
“Please, have your seat and be comfortable. You’re welcome here.”

They talked for a while, laughing and sharing stories. Rose felt something she had never felt before—acceptance.

Later that day, John and Rose returned home, and life continued quietly. Days passed. Everything around Rose began to change. She was no longer afraid. She smiled more. She felt safe.

Then one beautiful morning, Mrs. Clara called Rose.

“Rose,” she said gently, “you are a very good girl. I’ve been watching you for some time now.”

Rose listened carefully.

“I need a maid in my house,” Mrs. Clara continued. “My maid traveled some time ago, and work has not been easy for me. Would you like to work with me?”

Rose jumped up in excitement.

“Yes, Ma!” she said happily.
“I’ve been looking for a paying job. I want to continue my education. I stopped at secondary school, and I dream of going to the university someday.”

Mrs. Clara smiled warmly.
“It’s okay, Rose,” she said. “I understand.”

That evening, when Rose returned from Mrs. Clara’s house, her heart was full. She sat beside John and told him everything Mrs. Clara had said.

“She wants me to work for her,” Rose said softly. “I really want this job. I want to earn my own money so I can go back to school one day. I stopped at secondary school… but I don’t want my life to end there.”

John smiled, deeply happy with her decision.
“That’s a good choice, Rose,” he said. “I’m proud of you.”

Rose looked at him and felt a rush of emotions.
“John,” she said slowly, “I’m really grateful. I’ve stayed with you for a while now, and you’ve never tried to touch me or take advantage of me. You respected me. You’re a very good man.”

John laughed softly.
“It’s okay,” he said. “I’ve told you I love you. But I’ll give you time. When you’re ready, we’ll make everything perfect.”

Rose smiled. For the first time in her life, she felt safe with a man.

The next day, Rose officially resumed work at Mrs. Clara’s house. She worked with dedication—cleaning, arranging, cooking—doing everything with a grateful heart. She kept telling herself, This job will change my life.

One afternoon, while Rose was cleaning the kitchen, she suddenly felt someone’s presence. She looked up and saw a man standing at the entrance, staring at her quietly. His gaze was intense and unsettling.

The man stepped closer.

“Hi,” he said casually. “My name is Kelly. My mum told me you’re the new maid.”

“Yes, sir,” Rose replied politely.

Kelly smiled slowly.
“You’re very beautiful,” he said.

Rose felt uncomfortable immediately. The way he looked at her made her uneasy. Then he added words that crossed a line and made her heart sink.

Rose quickly returned to her work, trying to ignore him, but her peace was already disturbed.

That night, when she got home, Rose told John everything—every word, every look, every uncomfortable feeling.

John listened, then laughed lightly.
“Oh, Kelly?” he said. “That’s just how he is. He can be very naughty and playful.”

“But don’t worry,” he added. “Let’s not make it a big issue. ..

That evening, Rose returned to work as usual at Madam Clara’s house. She tried to focus on her duties, telling herself to stay strong. But that peace didn’t last long.

As she was arranging things, Kelly appeared again.

He walked straight up to her, his face serious.
“Rose,” he said, lowering his voice, “I need to tell you what’s on my mind. I really like you. I want us to be together.”

Rose froze.
“What?” she replied quickly. “No… I don’t think I’m interested.”

Kelly smiled confidently.
“Don’t worry,” he said. “I’ll give you the life you want. School abroad, Canada—anything. I’ll take you out of this mess.”

Rose shook her head.
“No. I’m not interested.”

Kelly’s face suddenly changed. His smile disappeared.
“Oh,” he said angrily, “is it because of that poor farmer? Is it because of John? That man has nothing to offer you. Be with me, and I’ll take care of you.”

Rose felt uncomfortable and hurt.
“No,” she said firmly. Without saying another word, she walked away.

That night, when Rose got home, she told John everything—every promise, every word, every insult.

John was furious.
“So he said I’m poor?” he asked angrily.
“He wants to send you abroad?”

Rose nodded sadly.
“Yes.”

John said nothing more, but his silence was heavy.

That night, Rose went to bed troubled. When she woke up the next morning, something felt different. The house that once felt safe now felt uneasy. She dressed up and went to work, but her heart was heavy.

As Rose entered Madam Clara’s house, Madam Clara noticed immediately.
Rose wasn’t smiling.
She looked sad.

“Rose,” Madam Clara called gently, “what is the problem? You can tell me anything. This is not you.”

Rose tried to hold back, but she couldn’t anymore.

“Ma,” she said quietly, “your son has been disturbing me. He keeps promising me many things, and it makes me uncomfortable in this house.”

Madam Clara’s face changed.

Rose had finally spoken.

Rose’s world shook the day she finally spoke out.
With trembling lips, she narrated everything Mrs. Clara’s son had been doing to her. At first, Mrs. Clara looked shocked—her eyes wide, her mouth slightly open. For a moment, Rose felt relieved, thinking she would be protected.

But the next words broke her heart.

“Rose,” Mrs. Clara said calmly, “it’s not a bad thing that my son likes you. You rejected him, fine. But why don’t you give it a second thought? Being with him can help you escape the poverty you’re living in with that farmer.”

Rose froze. 💔
Anger rushed through her like fire.

“Ma… why would you say that to me?” Rose replied, her voice shaking. “Why would you advise me to sell myself just to escape poverty?”

Tears filled her eyes as she continued, “If you want me to leave this job because of this, I don’t mind. I will leave.”

Without waiting for a response, Rose turned and walked away angrily. 🚶‍♀️😢

That evening, she returned home still boiling with emotions. As she stepped inside, something caught her attention.

Bundles of money… neatly arranged on the table. 💰💰💰

Her heart skipped.

She immediately called out, “John!”
John came out, and Rose asked in shock, “John, where did this money come from? This is too much! I knew you as a farmer… how did you get all this?”

John took a deep breath and looked at her gently.

“Rose,” he said softly, “this money is for you.”

“For me?” she asked, confused. “Why me?”

John smiled. “I’ve been saving this money for a long time. I wanted to start a business someday. But today… when I heard how you stood your ground, how you chose your dignity over money, how you defended yourself—I was deeply impressed.”

He continued, “You told me you want to go back to school. Don’t worry. Take this money. Go and pursue your education. I believe in you.”

Rose’s mouth dropped open. 😳
She couldn’t speak.
Her eyes filled with tears—not of pain, but of gratitude.
